Mark 10:25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of the needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. NIV
In today's culture, one may be inclined to believe that the "eye of the needle" Jesus meant belonged to a sewing needle for clothing. Actually, in the time of Jesus, cities were protected by tall walls. There was a large opening for people to go in and out to do business, buy and sell, etc. during the day. At night, a large gate was lowered to close the opening and protect the city. If a traveler came to the city after the gate had been shut, there was a small door next to the gate just large enough for a man to pass through. Therefore, if a traveler came with a camel, all the possessions the camel carried had to be removed. The camel was made to get on its knees and inch through the small door. Once the camel went through the door, the man had to carry all of his possessions through the door to enter the city. The door was call the "eye of the needle."
This is important information because in our human world, the camel going through the eye of a sewing needle is more of a fantasy. Jesus told parables based on true earthly laws, so that we could relate to what He was teaching. Just as when Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go through yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Mark 11:23 It is common knowledge that in the Middle East, a mountain is a symbol for a problem.
If Jesus does not teach based in reality, then parables with information about the spirit realm are called into question. Such as the parable about the beggar named Lazarus and the rich man who both died in Luke 16:19-31. I believe Jesus gives us a glimpse of the real afterlife. If all of the parables of Christ were based in reality, then what is described in Luke 16:19-31 was also based in reality and prophetic vs. 31 "If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead."
The Lord did say, (Mark 10:27) "With man this is impossible, but not with God; with God all things are possible." So, I could get to heaven and the Lord could say to me, "No Shannon, I did mean a sewing needle."
